7 Common Amazon Errors When You Publish Your Own Book

2. The Table of Contents Doesn’t Work

If you’ve created a table of contents the automatic MS Word way, Kindle will not understand it, nor will many other digital author platforms, such as Smashwords. The fix is long but very doable:

1. Write the text for the table of contents yourself.
2. Go to each chapter, select the title Chapter One, Chap 1, etc. and on MS Word, go to Insert>Bookmark.
3. On this window type in a chapter name without spaces, such as ONE, and hit “Add.”
4. Repeat for all chapters.
5. Return to the table of contents, select the text for each chapter and on MS Word, go to Insert>Hyperlink, or CTRL+K for us who do this all the time. (You can also add links to websites, social media, etc. here)
6. In the new window, hit “Place in this document” and choose the previously typed chapter name, i.e. ONE. Hit okay and repeat as necessary for all chapters.
Difficult: yes. But we do it on a regular basis.
