Can A Company Get You First Page on Google Pagerank?

If you’re building a site for the first, second, or hundredth time, no doubt you’re looking to get on the first page of Google for your search term(s). I’ve recently received a call from a company saying they will do just that. So is it a scam? In a word: yes. Google itself prides itself on maintaining and updating complex algorithms which decide what comes up when you type in anything from “Google Pagerank” to “unicorn for sale.”

How Google Pagerank Works

In short, pages are founded and listed in their search engine results in a certain order using an algorithm by Google Search that ranks websites. A few key factors to have on your own site in order to make a good impression on them include:

  • Selection of terms valued by Google users
  • Incorporation of these terms, or SEO keywords, used throughout
  • URL name, i.e. if you want to be found when someone types “unicorn for sale,” your URL should be unicornforsale.com
  • Number of inbound links. How many other sites link to yours?
  • Meta, id, name, and tags on all pages using optimal keyword saturation
  • Positive reviews on Google Plus, as well as other sites like Yelp
  • New content that is updated regularly
  • Integration of social media

And these terms are given in no particular order, given that Google and other major search engines are constantly changing their criteria.

Google Pagerank Scams

Even with spam blockers and clever tricks, companies can still get your phone number, email, and more. They’ll call you up with great rates for getting your site listed on the first page of Google and may even guarantee results. However, with only their word to back it up, chances are the “guarantee” will never be honored.

All you have to do is sign up for a few months of these scammer’s service and watch your hard earned profits drift away. Why? Because Google Pagerank is determined by Google and Google alone. If they allowed their search results be determined by who pays the most, they wouldn’t be the leader in the industry.

But Someone is Getting on Google’s First Page

Ah, those who did it right. Getting on the first page of results is no small feat, especially if you are in a competitive field, such as personal injury or real estate. However, those business who use a combination of URL, inbound/outbound links, AdWords, reviews, and more can do very well. For those in less competitive fields, simply having a well-designed and carefully worded site can do it. And don’t forget, rankings on search engines like Yahoo and Bing are also important.

Should I Hire Someone to Improve My Google Pagerank?

As with most things: it depends. First off, try using the PR Checker tool to see how your website ranks as it is. If unhappy with the results, call around to see which web design/development companies are answering their phones, telling you about their services, and NOT guaranteeing a first page ranking. It may take a few months to see if their services are working, but the return on investment can be substantial.
